Can a debit card be used for online purchases just like a credit card?

I opened a checking account a week ago and im still new to the stuff and im about to get my debit card, can a debit card be used for purchases on the internet just like a credit card?|||Yes, as long as it has the Visa/MasterCard logo on it.|||Yes if it has a Visa or MasterCard logo on the front. However even though can be used like a credit card, it debits your account, you are not extended credit, and it may take a couple of days before you will see the debit in your account.
