Can you use a debit card to check into a hotel?

Next summer, my friends and I want to go on a road trip, and were wondering if you can use a debit card at hotels. Yes, we will be going to another state, and we want to know if they'll accept it, and is it a good idea? Keep in mind that hotels/motels put holds on funds more than twice the room cost. This is to cover "incidentals. When you actuall check out, you will just be charged the actual costs. But, in the meantime, the cash in your bank account will be tied up in the hold. That's why it is much better to use credit cards for hotel/motels. It's just your line of credit tied up and not real cash.
