Can you get a debit card with a different bank?

I want to be able to buy things online, but I don't want a credit card.

I know Bankwest has a debit card but I'm with Commonwealth Bank and don't wnt to change over. Can I just get a debit card with Bankwest and put money on it as I see fit? Will it be expensive?

I'm in Australia.

Cheers!|||if you work you can,|||You have a couple of options

What you're looking for is called a debit card, or a card that is linked to the money in a bank account as opposed to a line of credit.

Normally you would have to have an account at the bank to use a card. Therefore the simplest, most secure option would be to open a seccond account at the bank which offers a debit card feaure.

Additionally, a trip to wal-mart or Walgreens could benefit you

Recently such services have been made available by companies such as Green Dot, as well as MasterCard and Visa, which allow you to have what is essentially a prepaid credit card.

They work very simply:

you purchase a card for a nominal fee, generally around $10. Then you tell the clerk at the store (walgreens and wal-mart both sell them) how much you would like to add to the card. You pay the cash for that amount, and the clerk adds the amount to the card.

You can also add money to the cards at several locations, including the store where you bought the card, any OTHER store which sells the cards, an any location with a coinstar kiosk, which will allow you to pay cash, credit or coin to add money to your card.

This service includes many benefits, including security in that these cards often carry free insurance against theft or loss.

Hope this helps!|||here is the link for bankwest.
