What's to stop a store from using your credit card or debit card again?

I went into a repair shop to get my computer monitor fixed and all went well but I could only pay in credit. So I used my debit card and later they charged me. But what's to stop them from using my card again? They know my number and those 3 numbers in the back of the card.|||That is the case everytime you use your plastic. If it makes you paranoid then deal only in cash.

It is a risk every man takes when we use the card|||Sometimes you will get billed twice by mistake. This has become less common as technology had developed. This is easily corrected by contacting your credit card company.

Intentionally adding additional charges is credit card fraud. It would be foolish for a company to do this because it would be very easy to trace. In addition to the possible criminal charges, the credit card company can also end their contract with the store. This would seriously limit their future business.|||Technically it could be done but what store in their right mind would want that reputation? It could potentially set them up for all sorts of problems not to mention the huge hit they'd take by people avoiding them for fear of it happening to them. Modern stores like Walmart have all this encrypted so even what's printed can't be used to make a manual sale. Mom-and-pop stores don't always have the highest technical system. I worked for a small company in the 90's where all the numbers were right there on the receipt. We could potentially retype the card and expiration in and then charge any amount but again-that would eventually be tracked back to the store and the employee. I'm sure they now have something more similar to the way things print now-where only the last 4 digits of a card print out but back then, yes it could happen. Especially since stores are required to keep these sales records for 7 years. Even if it did happen, as long as you are doing what you need to do: keep records of all your purchases, compare your receipts with your statement charges, etc. if something does come up wrong you can always contest it-this has always been offered by card companies. When you do this it puts the burden on the retailer to prove that you had a valid purchase. Obviously on a random extra or wrong charge there is nothing for them to give as proof so the charge would be reversed and the retailer has to correct things on their end.|||Nothing to stop them except their honesty, integrity, guilty conscience. Even though it is illegal, making it against the law won't stop any criminal. If it becomes known that they steal and use your number, they will be out of business very quickly. The problem is the owner will suffer the most damage. The employee who steals your number will suffer relatively little.|||Sometimes they do charge you twice. That's why you should always review your monthly statement for accuracy. You can then catch the double charge and dispute it with your credit card company.|||This is the chance you take using your debit card.

I highly doubt they want to risk their business over using a debit card fraudulently though.|||the human mind...and statutes.
