I am going to Las Vegas with my boyfriend for a vacation, I was going to purchase the hotel and plane tickets today but read in the fine print that it is just a booking reservation not a purchase of the stay. I will have to have a "credit card" at the check in to purchase the stay. will i be able to use my debit card instead?|||If your Debit Card has a Visa or Mastercard logo on it, it can be used wherever you use a credit card. If it doesn't, you'll want to call the hotel and ask them if you can use that. If they won't accept a debit card that's not a Visa or Mastercard, you can get a prepaid Mastercard or Visa from most drug stores, and discount stores.|||More people are using a debit card to pay for hotel rooms than ever before. There are many reasons people use debit cards. However, I recommend using credit cards instead of debit cards.Debit cards have become much more popular. Many people pay with debit cards instead of credit cards as a way to avoid spending more money than they have. You debit card is tied directly to your checking account and that can be a problem. When you check into a hotel you are asked/required to put a credit card or debit card on file for incidental expenses like phone calls and in room movies. Most people don't realize that the hotel then puts a hold on their account. When you use a debit card, the hotel locks a portion of your checking account balance until the time that you check out and settle your bill, possibly even after.|||If your debit card has a master card or visa logo on it.. then YES, you can use it. If not, you'll need a normal credit card.
You should also check to see if you need a "deposit" when you check in. Most hotel hold another $200 or so for incidentals. If you don't have a credit card for this.. you'll need cash.|||well lt would be a good idea to have a credit card but you can also try a debit as well. why not give them a call on the the to be sure rather then you getting all the way out there and they will not take debit|||You can book with your debit card. However, be aware that they may hold additional money as a security deposit.
I strongly recommend that you contact the hotel and find out their policies|||The hotel asks for a credit card at check-in to cover anything that may be above and beyond your room and tax for that room. Do not think of a hotel room purchase as you would think of purchasing a Pepsi from Wal-mart. When you purchase a Pepsi from Wal-mart you walk out the door with it and the transaction is complete. When you purchase a hotel room in advance you are just buying the room and paying taxes on it. When you get to the hotel there a myriad of other things that you could get charged for, especially "incidentals". Sometimes people refer to them as hidden fees, but essentially these are extra services that can be utilized during the course of your stay. The hotel is not going to take your word that you will pay up at the end of your stay, so they require a credit card at check-in. The other reason for the credit card is theft and damage. Sometimes people remove everything from bedspreads to furniture and the credit card is there to cover any such theft.
That being said, most hotels take a pre-determined authorization on your debit or credit card based on your length of stay. It's not something the front desk clerk is necessarily allowed to control, so please don't badger them about it. If there is an issue about the amount please ask for a Manager to discuss it with you. When you present a credit card the authorization is taken against your credit...when you present a debit card the authorization takes that pre-determined amount of cash out of your checking account and holds it. It can take up to 2 weeks after you depart the hotel for that cash to be put back into your checking account. The same thing happens at rental car agencies and most gas stations. Hope this helps!
