Banks such as HSBC offers a choice of an ATM card or a Debit Card. I thought they was the same but I guess they are not so what is the difference between the two?|||A debit card allows purchases without writing a check on your checking account. These are usually accepted anywhere Visa or Mastercard are accepted. The debit card can also function as an ATM card.
An ATM card only allows transactions at the bank's ATM or though the bank's ATM network. It can not be used to make purchases at a store or through on-line merchants.|||ATM card: Only used at the specific bank you bank with for ID purposes and at ATMs supported by your bank. Has no Visa/MC logo.
Debit card: Has Visa/MC logo and can be used as a method of payment out shopping, dinner, etc... Some merchants will sometimes process it as credit, but otherwise the funds are immediately drawn out of your checking account.
FYI: I've been working in banking for more than a year.
